PEDICULOSIS PUBIS

AKA "PUBIC LICE" OR "CRABS"

OVERVIEW

  • a disease caused by the crab louse Phthirus pubis (known for) infesting human genitals.
  • Phthirus pubis a parasitic insect that feeds solely on human blood.
  • Humans are the only known host for this particular parasite.
  • Their life cycle is about 50 days (from egg to death).
  • At adulthood they're approximately 1.3-2mm long

DETAILS

INFECTION

  • The most common cause is sexual intercourse.
  • It can be spread by sharing towels, clothes, and other fibrous materials.
  • Although adults are the most commonly infected children can be too.
  • The lice can infect other areas besides the pubis
  • Ex background picture is an eyelash that has been infected.

SYMPTOMS/SIGNS

  • Severe itching of the genitals
  • Bluish discoloration around affected areaq
