WHAT IS THE PUEBLO TRIBE?

  • The Pueblo tribe is a Southwest tribe.
  • The tribe began in the early 1600s and late 1500s.

Houses were made of many materials, such as mud, clay, sticks and most importantly limestone. Over time house for the Pueblo tribe progressively got bigger. The Pueblo tribe lived in the southwest part of the United States. (Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico)

The Pueblo people were farmers. They grew corn, beans, squash, and other crops. They also ate what they hunted. The Pueblo tribe ate corn almost every meal.

Clothes for the Pueblo tribe aren’t your everyday clothes. The are much different then the clothes we wear. The men wore breech clothes and headdresses and women wore cotton dresses and moccasins

TRADITIONS

  • The Pueblo Tribe believed in Kachinas
  • Kachinas are spirits of natural forces
  • They would make Kachina dolls to teach children about them
  • They would do ceremonies to get Kachinas to join their tribe

FAMILY STRUCTURE AND GOVERNMENT

  • They didn’t have an exact government
  • So the are organized into clans
  • The leaders are called headmen
  • The headmen are usually elder members which are usually 25 years old.
