Rule 1: Put quotes only around the words the speaker actually says.

Rule 2: Put commas before or after the explanation words, in order to hook them to the rest of the sentence. (Explanation words are the words that explain who said it.)

Rule 3: If the explanation words come in the middle of a sentence, put a comma before and after them.

Rule 4: If the person talking is asking a question or making a strong statement, use a question mark or an exclamation point instead of a comma.

Rule 5: Only capitalize the first letter after a quotation mark if it is the first word of a new sentence from the person being quoted.

Rule 6: Every time a new speaker talks, start a new paragraph, no matter how short the sentence is.
