It is a dot at the end of a sentence unless it is ending with an exclamation mark or question mark. It gives you a pause that lets you take a breath before you carry on. It can also be used to abbreviate things. For example T.V.

Commas let you take a little breath in the middle of a long sentence and is used to separate two linked ideas. They look like a dot with a tail.
