PUSH AND PULL FACTORS

BY EMILY WELCH

Push Factors

A push factor either makes people want to leave or forces people to leave an area.

Pull Factors

Pull factors attract a person to a certain area.

Contrast between push and pull factors:

A push factor is causing someone to want to leave an area, where as a pull factor is drawing someone into an area.

Examples of push factors:

1. A great example of a push factor is drought because if there isn't a lot of water, people cant grow crops which then leads to a low food supply and dehydration because there isnt any water. Nobody will want to live in an area with little water.

2. Another example of a push factor is a natural disaster. Is something happens such as a tornado or hurricane and everything gets destroyed, it will be difficult to live there, causing many people to leave and go to a better area forever or until their community gets rebuilt.

Examples of pull factors:

1st Example of a Pull Factor:

A great example of a pull factor, is freedom. A lot of people from other countries are attracted to America because we are a country free to religion, speech, and for both men and women to take almost the same roles in most jobs. A lot of countries don't have the freedom we have in America. Take North Korea for example. Kim Jong-un, the president, forces certain beliefs into the people of North Korea and they can't have their own beliefs and speak about them unless they want to get into trouble.

2nd Example of a pull factor:

Work is also an example of a pull factor because if there are better jobs that pay more in another area, people will want to move there. This is happening a lot with people in Mexico. A lot of people have terrible jobs that don't pay well, and people are beginning to migrate to the United States in hopes of finding a better job that pays more so they can provide for their family.
