PRESENTATION OUTLINE

QUADRATICS

DEFINITION- INVOLVING THE SECOND AND NO HIGHER POWER OF A VALUE

FACTS ABOUT QUADRATICS

  • The standard form of a quadratic equation looks like this.
  • ax2+bx+c=0
  • It makes it quadratic when it is squared.
  • A b and c are constants.
  • The co efficient is a.

KEY WORDS

  • Parabola- a curve formed by an intersection
  • Max and min- max if the parabola is when vertex is high min is low
  • Vertex- the highest point
  • Axis of symetry- line through shape, where it's a mirror image.

MAX AND MIN

  • Max is the highest value of the parabola and opens downward
  • Min is the lowest value of the parabola and opens upward

VERTEX

  • Lowest or highest point of the parabola
  • It depends on whether it is max or min

AXIS OF SYMETRY

  • Is the line down the middle of the parabola
  • Creates a mirror Image
  • Even with the vertex

BALLS, ARROWS, AND MISSILES

  • If you throw a ball it will go in the air, slow down, then come down again
  • If you throw a ball from 3m above ground with velocity of 14 m/s
  • When will it hit the ground? Gravity pulls changing speed by 5 m/s
  • Equation- -5t2+14t+3=0
  • T=-.2 or t=3

CONTINUED

  • Another equation that can be used for the last exapmple is..
  • X=-b+or-square rootb2-4ac divided by 2a
