FAMOUS PEOPLE

  • Willem Janszoon- Was the captain of the Dutch ship ' The Duyfken ', that sailed onto the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1606.
  • James Cook- Was the captain of the HMS Endeavour, he claimed the East coast of Australia for the British.
  • Alan Cunningham- Was a botanist who discovered the Darling Downs, Brisbane and a Great Dividing Range gap.
  • George Bowen- In 1859, he became Queensland's first governor and established that Queensland will be separate.
  • James Nash- Discovered gold in the Mary River in 1867 which started a gold rush.

WHEN WAS THE COLONY ESTABLISHED?

On December 10th 1859, Sir George Ferguson Bowen established the Queensland colony. On June the 6th Queensland became a separate colony from NSW with its own governor.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

  • 1860- The first Queensland elections are held. Robert George Wyndham Herbert becomes Queensland's first premier.
  • 1863- The Kanakas( Papua New Guineans) arrived in Queensland to work in the cane fields.
  • 1859- 6 of June Queen Victoria signs the papers to declare the independence of Queensland.
  • 1867- James Nash discovers gold and a gold rush begins.
  • 1891- The Queensland Labor Party forms.

Who? How? Was the colony governed?

The governor was chosen through a election process. For the entire of the 1800s all of the governors were male. The first governor was Sir George Ferguson Bowen. Women weren't allowed to vote, and neither were convicts that were still serving their penalty.

Who named Brisbane!

Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane was the 6th governor of New South Wales. After he finished his service as the governor the government divided to name a city after him for his fantastic work, so they called the capital of Queensland, Brisbane in his honour.
