PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CITING QUOTATIONS

"IT'S NOT THAT HARD" (442).

Quotes must have their page number at the end of the sentence, before the end punctuation. Often you will also have to include the author's name within the parentheses, before the number.

EXCEPTIONS

  • If you mention the page number earlier in the sentence
  • You do not need to include it after the quote.
  • Ex: On page 442, "it's not that hard" comes up (Tyler).
  • The same applies to names.
  • Ex: Tyler says, "it's not that hard" (442).

Only periods and commas go inside the quotation marks, unless the other punctuation is integral to the quote. Question and exclamation marks go outside, and will typically override weaker punctuation.

EXAMPLES

  • He said, "I'm swag. You know that" (Darsh 7).
  • "But what does 'swag' really mean?" Darsh asked (21).
  • On page 32, he even says, "I run the 50 meter Darsh" (Parth)!

If someone is quoted repeatedly, you may use "Ibid" in place of their name. Use "[sic]" in a quote if something is misspelled instead of correcting it.

EXAMPLES

  • "I are swag" (Darsh 89).
  • "Swag are I" (Darsh 110).
  • "Swag are swag" (Ibid 121).
