PRESENTATION OUTLINE

RABIES VIRUS

  • Rabies is usually found in Asia and Africa
  • Rarely found in the US
  • Usually transmitted through bite
  • Is a virus that attacks the central nervous system

SYMPTOMS

  • Flu like symptoms
  • Causes up to 55,000 cases a year
  • Fever, headache, muscle aches, and nausea are early signs
  • Symptoms worsen as time progresses and death is more likely
  • Some include bizzare thoughts, aggresiveness, muscle spasms, and confusion

HISTORY OF RABIES

  • Existed as early as the years of BC
  • In the 16th century, rabies was discovered as a fatal virus
  • First vaccine was discovered in 1885
  • An experiment done involving the virus led to vaccines we have today
  • The experiment involved injecting a weak virus from an infected animal into another

THE PATHOGEN

  • The pathogen that causes it comes from the Rhabdoviridae family
  • The virus is a bullet shape
  • Is usually 75 nanometers in diameter
  • Lengths between 130 and 200 nanometers
  • Attacks the cenral nervous system

MEDICAL TREATMENT

  • After a bite wash out the wound with soap and water
  • A series of injections is usually involved with treating the virus
  • The longer you wait the more deadly it becomes
  • Rabies treatment isnt guranteed to work
  • Human Rabies Immune Globulin HRIG is the vaccine against rabies

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  • If you own a pet make sure rabbies shot is up to date
  • Stay away from wild animals even if they look OK
  • Dont approach any animal that looks suspicious
  • If bit make sure you get medical attention right away and wash with soap and water
