French Teacher; Kalamazoo, MI
My name is Rachel Larner and I teach French at Loy Norrix High School-- a public high school in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Teacher

I currently teach levels one through three of French and for the past four years I have been the only one. I'm gaining a colleague this year because I have grown the program enough to be able to offer AP French for the first time in the 2016-17 school year.

My students are grades 9-12 and this graduating class was the first one I have taught for all four years of their high school careers.

This is me with my level three class. The seniors I've had all four years and the juniors will be the first AP class.

We are trying to look smart...it ended up being a chaotic argument between me and a student who wouldn't put their finger guns away ("Madame, I have the safety on, it's fine!")

student

I am where I am today in large part due to my mentor teacher. She teaches French at Mason High School-- a public school in Mason, MI (just outside of Lansing).

In this photo we are presenting together at a conference in Lansing. It is the Michigan World Language Association conference and we presented on "tough customers". I was completely out of my comfort zone and am 100% glad I did it.

Margaret taught me to always share my ideas with others and to work closely with other language teachers in the area, because we are often singletons in our schools.

francophone

I have studied abroad one other time. It was an accelerated summer program in the summer of 2010.

I lived in Tours, France-- a town in the center of the country. I often compare it to Ann Arbor in terms of SES and size.

I dabbled in my undergrad program and believe that I ended up in French because it was a way to combine my many interests-- I can study literature, politics, sociology, etc through a different language. What's more is that it is a middle ground between my love of science, and my love of creativity.

cyclist

I love to be outside. The past two summers I have biked the Kal-Haven trail--- a 33ish mile trail from Kalamazoo to South Haven (a town on Lake Michigan).

nerd

I don't know that words are needed here. I'll try-- I'm a fan of all things magical, fantastical, and sci-fi.

I love to read and watch films in this genre.

I am a gamer. That may have been obvious too...
