Racism is when people are treated differently just because of the colour of their skin, beliefs and culture.
Racism can also be when people are treated unfairly and are judged by other people. Sometimes Aboriginals are not given the same human rights as other white Australians.
The causes of racism are: people believing they are more superior than Aboriginals, judging people by their looks, not accepting that everyone is equal, Aboriginals being misunderstood and ignored and people acting like all Aboriginals are not part of the human society.
The impacts of racism cause depression, anxiety, stress, identity crisis, low self esteem, mental health issues, emotional stress, physical stress and a sense of helplessness among all Aboriginals.
Statistics show that Aboriginals are the poorest, unhealthiest, least unemployed, worst housed and most imprisoned Australians.
The impacts of racism on the Aboriginals culture is very large. Sometimes Aboriginals try and hide that they are Aboriginal by ignoring their culture, whereas others are depressed by it. Many Aboriginals stop acknowledging their culture and beliefs because of peer pressure.
A way we can spread awareness about this issue in the Canberra community is by, 1. Writing a letter to the Canberra council informing them of the situation, 2. Having a day where all the Canberra school children paint there nails red , yellow or black to spread awareness, 3. Standing up to racist people and including all Aboriginals at work, school or even in your neighbourhood.
