OTTO VON BISMARCK

  • Otto Eduard Leopold, Prince of Bismarck, Duke of Lauenburg
  • Prussian statesman
  • dominated German and European affairs with his conservative policies
  • created a balance of power that preserved peace in Europe
  • Prime minister of Prussia

CHILDHOOD

  • Bismarck was born in Schönhausen
  • Wealthy family
  • He was fluent in English, French, Italian, Polish, and Russian
  • educated at Johann Ernst Plamann's elementary school
  • From 1832 to 1833 he studied law at the University of Göttingen

LATE YEARS

  • His tombstone said
  • "Here lies a true servant of the Emperor Wilhelm I"
  • In 1890, Bismarck resigned after disagreeing with the new emperor, Wilhelm II.
  • He retired to his estate near Hamburg
  • died there on 30 July 1898.

KLEMENS VON METTERNICH

  • full name: Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar
  • 15 May 1773 – 11 June 1859
  • Foreign Minister of the Austrian Empire
  • liberal revolutions of 1848 forced his resignation
  • the "Metternich system" of international congresses

CHILDHOOD

  • Born into the House of Metternich in 1773
  • son of a diplomat
  • received a good education at the universities of Strasbourg and Mainz
  • His father Franz George Karl Count Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein
  • His mother Countess Maria Beatrice Aloisia von Kagenegg

LATE YEARS

  • Redrew Europe after Napoleon
  • Congress of Vienna
  • died in Vienna on 11 June 1859
  • Died at age 86
  • He had seven sons and seven daughters
