Fields of Radiology

  • Nuclear Medicine Imaging
  • Positron Emission Tomography

Both fields involve tracers. A tracer is a radioactive isotope that can be viewed by an x-ray.

Both fields we will be talking about involve tracers.

Most common Tracers

  • Iodine - 123
  • Iodine - 131
  • Thallium - 201
  • Gallium - 67
  • Indium - 111

Untitled Slide

USes for tracers

  • Kidney Function
  • Cancer diagnosis
  • Thyroid issues
  • Heart Function

Half life Of tracers

  • Iodine - 123 -13 hours
  • Iodine - 131- 8 days
  • Thallium - 201- 3 days
  • Gallium - 67- 3 days
  • Indium - 111- 2.8 days

Iodine - 123

  • First administered as 50 mCi.
  • After 13 hours it reduces to 25 mCi.
  • After 26 hours we are left with 12.5 mCi.
  • Finally at 39 hours we have the minimal amount of 6.25 mCi.

Thank you
