Rain Reign

The main character of this story is named Rose Howard. Rose is diagnosed with high-functioning autism. She is a very misunderstood child who loves prime numbers and homonyms.

The setting of the story is in Hatford, New York. The year is not specifically stated, however, it does state that it takes place during October of Rose's 5th grade year.

The story is about Rose's daily life, what she goes through. Rose has a very difficult time with human interactions with everyone, other than her uncle. When a hurricane goes through her home town her life flips upside down, her schedule gets thrown off, and she loses her dog, Rain.

Analysis #1: Rose goes to a fairly small school. As a result of her geographic location, a lot of the teachers, students, and locals do not seem to have a lot of experience with autism. The way that they have handled her behavior in this book has surprised me. Her father should have been more educated on her diagnosis than he seemed to have been.

Analysis #1: Rose has very auditory-sensitive hearing. She can often hear sounds that no one around her can hear or notice. This affects her a lot in life, for example, during class she was having a difficult time paying attention to her work because the humming of her teacher's laptop was bothering her, the rest of the students in the classroom were very confused and couldn't hear what she was talking about, they thought she was crazy.

Analysis #2: I can relate to Rose in some areas of her life. I too need to have a daily routine. Mine is nowhere near as extreme or specific but if I do not follow my routine I will get very distraught and lose focus. I do not allow myself to have games on my phone or watch Netflix because if I do I will get easily distracted and never get my work done. I have a set routine of daily tasks because it keeps me happy, heathly, and focused.

Analysis #2: I can also relate to Rose on how she gets upset when she messes up on re-writing her homonyms list and how she would have to start all over just because of a little mistake. I can get very picky with the things I do and if I don't do it the way I want then I will get very upset and start over. If I don't play my guitar exactly how I want to I will start the song over and over again till I get it right. However, I'm not as extreme with it as Rose is.

Analysis #3: Rose does not seem to be close to her father. One of the things that bother Rose is when people do not follow the rules they are given. When Rose was telling her father about the students in her class that broke the rules he got annoyed, "my father stands up fast. He starts to throw the remote control at me, but then I think he remembers that the TV won't work without it so he puts it down".

Analysis #3: Rose's father clearly has a negative effect on her. He has a very difficult time raising Rose. She is not free to express herself and be comfortable with who she is. The only person that she is able to freely talk to about the things that she is interested in is her Uncle, Weldon. Her father does not care much about her education, he refused to go in for meetings and to take her to a school that will be able to give her the help she desperately needs.

Analysis #4: In this class, I have learned how important it is to learn about our differences and to celebrate them. The main character in this story, Rose, needs the people in her life to learn more about her diagnosis and to celebrate her uniqueness. So many people in her life think she's crazy, however, if they were to learn more about her they would see how wonderful she is and how she deserves to be treated as an equal.
