Who was Ramses II?

  • Ramses II was one of the pharaohs in the 19th dynasty.
  • His rein lasted about 70 years, second longest in Egyptian history.
  • Also known as Ramses the Great.
  • Ramses II is often known as the greatest, most powerful, and most celebrated pharaoh in Egypt.
  • Rein: about 1279 B.C.-1213 B.C.

WHERE AND WHEN DID RAMSES II LIVE?

  • Ramses lived over 90 years, seeming almost impossible for life back then.
  • Lived in Nile Delta before rein.
  • Built a full-scale city called Pi-Ramesse.
  • Pi-Ramesse was the new capital of Ancient Egypt up to the 21 dynasty.

WHAT WAS RAMSES II KNOWN FOR?

  • Ramses II was known for his architecture; he built monuments out of older ones.
  • Ramses II was captain of the army by age 10.
  • Ramses II built Abu Simbel to represent himself, the battle of Kadesh, and his wife, Nefertari.
  • Ramses II attacked places like Libya, Nubia, and Syria many times trying to claim more land.

WHAT WAS THE TOMB OF RAMSES II LIKE?

  • Ramses II's tomb was initially located in The Valley of the Kings. It was then moved because of tomb robbers.
  • After about two weeks of being moved, it was then moved to tomb DB320, and found in 1881.
  • The mummy of Ramses II is thought to be the best preserved mummy found.
  • Scientists were able to figure that Ramses II had red hair.

WHAT WAS FAMILY LIFE FOR RAMSES II LIKE?

  • Ramses II had about 12 wives, but hus chief wife was Nefertari.
  • The family of Ramses II didn't origin in royalty, but they fought for it.
  • Ramses II had well over 100 children.
  • The father and previous ruler of Ramses II was his father, Seti I.
  • His mother was Tuya.

HOW DID RAMSES II HELP OR HURT PEOPLE?

  • Ramses II hurt his army because he believed two Hittite spies that lied to him.
  • The Hittities were then able to fight against him and his army with Ramses II unprepared.
  • Ramses II help hus army because he stayed out of battles he knew he would loose.
  • Ramses II is believed to be the pharaoh in the biblical Exodus story, where Israelites were hurt.
  • Even though it wasn't his fault, the death if Ramses II led to less power in Egypt.

WHY WAS THE REIN OF RAMSES II SUCCESSFUL?

  • After the rule of Akhenaten, Ramses II brought back regular religion to Egypt.
  • Ramses was able to keep Egyptians safe from armies and empires.
  • Ramses led several campaigns to close places, conquering land to grow his empire.
  • Ramses II created monuments to make sure people remembered his rein.
