RAYON HISTORY

  • First manufactured fiber developed.
  • Also known as viscose.
  • Produced artificial silk or rayon in 1910.
  • The term "rayon" was first used in 1924.
  • Oldest man made fiber.

HOW RAYON IS MADE AND MANUFACTURED

  • Some major rayon producing areas are China, India, and Europe
  • The major source of cellulose required in the creation of rayon is wood pulp, which is produced from timber.
  • After the bark has been removed, the wood is chipped into very small pieces,
  • It's boiled under pressure, chemically treated, washed, and then dried.
  • The final product is a hybrid material called viscose rayon.

  • Highly absorbent

PROPER CARE FOR RAYON

  • Best to hand wash it.
  • Wash in cool or temperate water.
  • Never wring, twist, or bunch up rayon.
  • Place on a hanger to dry.

USES OF RAYON

  • Used in textile industry to make textiles.
  • Making tyre cords.
  • Making carpets and surgical dressings.
  • Used to make bedspreads, curtains, blankets, etc.
  • Used for sportswear, slacks, suits, etc.

OTHER RAYON FACTS

  • Appears in woven and knitted form.
  • Frequently used in evening gowns and other flowing garments.
  • Rayon fibers are wet spun.
  • Easy to dye.
  • Alternative to silk.
