WHAT IS AN APOTHECARY?

  • An individual in Medieval Europe that sold wine, spices and herbs.
  • Role: supply drugs to doctors, not prescribe medicine themselves.

THE SOCIETY OF APOTHECARIES

  • Established in 1617
  • Gave apothecaries freedom in the kinds of medicine they could sell
  • Like quack remedies and patent medicines

Quack remedies: Medicine that had been sold to someone, knowing that it wouldn't work.
Quack: someone who sells quack remedies

  • Medicine that had been sold to someone, knowingly that it doesn't work
  • Quack: someone who sells those types of remedies

  • used by physicians & apothecaries for medical recipes

DISTILLATION STILL

  • apparatus used to distill liquid mixtures by heating to a boil and then cooling to condense the vapor.
