THE GIVER

The giver is written from the point of view of Jonas, an 18 boy living in a futuristic society that has eliminated all pain, fear, war, and hatred. There is no prejudice, since everyone looks and acts basically the same, and there is very little competition.

• The Giver transmits memories to Jonas
• Memories of pleasure and pain
• The memories make Jonas’s life richer and more meaningful
• Jonas’s community have lost the capacity to love
• the Giver reveals to Jonas that release is the same as death.

• Jonas is forced to leave earlier than planned
• Desperate to save Gabriel, Jonas steals his father’s bicycle and a supply of food and sets off for Elsewhere.
• Gradually, he enters a landscape full of color, animals, and changing weather.
• Jonas and Gabriel travel for a long time until heavy snow makes bike travel impossible.
