RHODOPHYTA HAS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE MAINTENANCE FOR CORAL REEFS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Red algae is a plant-like protist
  • They're one of the oldest, and largest, groups of eukaryotic algae with about 5,000-6,0000 species
  • Can be multicellular
  • It gets it's color from the pigment phycoerythrin and reflects red light and absorbs blue light
  • Red algae photosynthesize and live at somewhat greater depths than most other "algae".

  • Red algae is commonly found in tide pools and in coral reefs, but can be found anywhere including polar and tropic waters
  • The cells in red algae lack flagella
  • They get their energy from photosynthesis

  • Can be used/found in common medicines

  • Can be used/found in common foods
