EXODUS
How do we understand Exodus in the overall story of the Bible
GENESIS
God's purpose in the Bible:
Genesis, God s creating the world and calling it "good," In Rev 21-22, Gods "makes all things new" (21:5).
HUMANITY'S PURPOSE
In Gen 2 he gives humanity a job to do—a mission—from which he never releases humanity.
There the holy God creates humans in his own image to reflect his gracious rule over creation so that it would flourish with well-ordered life (Gen 1:28; 2:15), reach its full potential, and thereby bring proper honor and glory to God.
THE PROBLEM
humankind refuses to live under Gods rule and reflect that gracious rule and image to the rest of creation,
Gods purposes for creation as a whole are delayed.
THE RESULT
Humanity's refusal to engage in this image-bearing pattern of activity bars them from the tree of life, making them susceptible to the forces of death. It alienates people from the life-giving God, the created order, and each other, all of which leads to evil, violence, and more death (Gen 4:1-16; 6:5-6, 11-12).
WHAT GOD DOES
After Gen 3, therefore, Gods mission involves saving humanity from its guilt, as well as saving humanity and the entire created order from the consequences of human rebellion.
This part of God s mission, however, becomes a subplot to the main plot of the story of God's mission, namely, to bring creation to its intended destiny through the agency of humanity in a way that brings proper honor and glory to God.
THE FLOOD & BABEL
Even after the flood, when God attempts to wipe creation clean, humanity remains inclined toward violence and death-dealing forces (Gen 8:21; 11:1-9). The disorder and chaos introduced into the garden are then magnified at Babel when "all the people on earth" are gathered together in one place, refusing to fulfill the creation mandate to move out and fill all the earth with the fruitful blessing of new life that expresses itself in diverse peoples and ways.
So God has to forcefully divide and disperse them in order to restart the process of fulfilling his dream of bringing his whole creation to its intended destiny through the agency of humanity.
GOD CHOOSES A MAN : Abraham and sons
through Israel, to engender life in all its fullness for the nations and creation as a whole.
We come to Exodus and how God frees Israel for himself to fulfill his eternal purposes.
So, How does he do that? What are the pieces of the puzzle?
