REGIA ROUGHLY TRANSLATES TO "KINGS HOUSE" OR "ROYAL PALACE"

AGE

CONSTRUCTED BY NUMA POMPILIUS IN THE FIFTH CENTURY BC

PURPOSE

IT WAS ORIGINALLY A RESIDENCE FOR THE KINGS OF ROME

PURPOSE

THE REGIA WAS LATER USED AS AN OFFICE FOR THE PONTIFEX MAXIMUS.

THE PONTIFEX MAXIMUS

A RELIGIOUS LEADER THAT WAS IN CHARGE OF SOOTHSAYERS ETC.

IMPORTANCE/SIGNIFICANCE

  • used as a residence for kings and an office for religious leaders
  • contained archives that held information over wars and the history
  • It also contained a small shrine to Mars in which sacrifices were made

REGIA DESCRIPTION

  • Was destroyed 148 BC and 36 BC
  • War, famine, and social interaction data was kept in the archives
  • Used to be made primarily of gold
  • After being destroyed four times it is now made of stone
  • Contained many statues and artwork praising the gods
