INDIAN REMOVAL ACT

The Indian Removal Act was a law that was passed on May 28, 1830 by Congress. This was during Andrew Jackson presidency. It allowed the government to negotiate with the Indians tribes in the South to give up their land in Georgia. This meant that they would be removed and sent to live in the territory west of the Mississippi River.

BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is an part of the federal government in the United States. It is responsible for the governing and management of 55,700,000 acres of land that was given to the Native Americans by the United States. The bureau has been around since March 11, 1824.

JOHN ROSS

John Ross was the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828–1866, serving longest than anybody in his position. He has been described as the Moses of his people because of his fight to keep his nation safe. Ross has influenced many Indian nations by using his power to try and change the treatment of Native American people while many were going through the Trail of Tears.

WORCESTER V. GEORGIA

Worcester v. Georgia was a case in the United States Supreme Court that had convicted Samuel Worcester. They discussed why white men were allowed to take Native American lands without checking if it was legal in the Constitution was not allowed according to the law. Even though this had been said Andrew Jackson ignored it and had continued on with his plan.

TREATY OF NEW ECHOTA

The Treaty of New Echota was a treaty signed on December 29, 1835 by officials of the United States government and a small part of the Cherokee political group. The treaty was agreed on in March 1836, despite most of the Cherokee nation not agreeing on this solution, and the treaty was missing the signature of Chief John Ross.

TRAIL OF TEARS

The Trail of Tears is a name given to the forced relocation and the murder of many Native American people from the southeastern parts of the U.S for example Georgia. This was the following of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. This removal had included many members of the Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations they were moved from their homelands to different Indian Territory in the present-day state of Oklahoma. The trail of tears started in 1836 and ended in 1839.

INDIAN TERRITORY

The Indian Territories describe the part of land set aside by the United States Government. In the 1830's and earlier many Native Americans were found in the southeastern part of the U.S in mostly Georgia. After the Indian Removal Act many Native Americans were moved to Oklahoma . The land was seen as the same as Georgia but it was many miles away from their homelands.
