CHRISTIANITY

  • Founder: Jesus
  • Date founded: 33 A.D.
  • Place founded: Palestine, Israel.

PALESTINE

  • Place where Christianity first started.

BELIEFS AND DIVISONS

  • There is only one God
  • There is an afterlife
  • 10 commandments
  • Divisions: Catholic, Protestant, Other Christians,
  • Orthodox, and Anglicans.

SACRED TEXTS AND HOLIDAYS

  • Sacred text: The Holy Bible
  • Holidays: Christmas and Easter

RITUALS/PRACTICES

  • Going to church every Sunday morning
  • Going to church every Wednesday night
  • Getting cleansed of your sins(baptized)
  • Religious confirmation
  • Fasting (on occasion)

HISTORY

  • Christianity was founded in 33 A.D. in Palestine.
  • The founder of Christianity is Jesus Christ.
  • Christianity spread very quickly around the world.
  • Christians use the Holy Bible as a guideline as to how you should live.
  • Christianity is the largest religion in the world (about 2 billion adherents)

ISLAM

  • Founder: Prophet of Islam: Muhammad
  • Date founded: 610 A.D.
  • Place founded: Saudi Arabia
  • Sacred text: Quaran

ISLAMIC HOLIDAYS

  • Eid Al-Fitr: celebrated after a month of fasting.
  • Eid Al-Adha: sacrificing an animal and sharing it with family and friends.

RITUALS/PRACTICES

  • Fasting: not eating for a certain period of time.
  • Animal sacrifices: Killing an animal for ritual/religious purpose.
  • Purification: cleansing themselves before ritual/religious purpose.
  • Pilgrimage: physical and mental religious journey.
  • There are a lot of different divisions of the Islamic religion.

BELIEFS

  • There is only one God
  • The " Six articles of faith" they believe you're only an islam if you live by these
  • There is an afterlife. Day of judgement: Paradise versus Hell.
  • The way of life is to live to please Allah.

HISTORY

  • It's adherents are known as Muslims.
  • The Quran began with relevations to Muhammad when he was 40 years old.(610)
  • Rise of islam began around time that Muslims took flight in the Hijra.
  • In 630, Muslims conquered Mecca.
  • June 632, Muhammad died.

SHINTO AND THEIR DIVISIONS

  • Founder: no specific founder
  • Date founded: 500 B.C.E.
  • Where founded? Japan
  • Divisions: Shinto all branches, Seicho-No-le, Tenrikyo, PL Kyodan, Sekai Kyuseikyo,
  • Zenrinkai, Tensho Kotai Jingukyo, Ennokyo.

SACRED TEXTS/RITUALS AND PRACTICES/HOLIDAYS

  • Texts: the Kojiki, the Nihongi
  • Practices/Beliefs:
  • Kami, Ritual dance, Ritual purity,
  • Polytheism, Animism, Japanese Festivals, and Mythology.
  • Holidays: Spring Festival, Autumn Festival, Annual Festival, Divine Procession

HISTORY

  • Has no specific founder or specific date.
  • The Yayoi culture is directly related to the Shinto.
  • There are a few shrines in Shinto
  • For example: Ichinomiya and jingu
  • Most of the shrines are in Kyoto

BELIEFS

  • They believe in "Kami"- sacred or divine beings.
  • There are a lot of different "Kami's" which are based off things like nature.
  • Purification rites called Harae are a vital part of Shinto.
  • They believe that there is an afterlife. A place called "Yomi"
  • "Yomi" is a gloomy underground realm that separates the living from the dead.
