A LITTLE BIT ABOUT FRANCE AND RELIGIONS THERE

France is a country in Europe and is famous for their food, art and traditions and history. France has a great population of 66 million people. When it comes to religions in France, for the past thousand years, France has been one of the principal "catholic" countries in Europe. France now holds an variety of religions.

MUSLIM- 5-10%
UNAFFILIATED - 4%
PROTESTANT - 2%
JEWISH - 1%

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT AUSTRALIA AND RELIGIONS THERE

Like France, Australia is a home to many religions. When looking at the different religions, most religions in France originated in Europe and a few religions in Australia originated in Asia.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT RELIGIONS IN FRANCE?

-Roman Catholicism - Roman Catholicism is by far the largest Christian group. With more than one billion people. Catholic includes about half the world's Christians. Roman Catholic beliefs are not very different to the other main branches of Christianity.

-Muslim - Muslim began in Arabia and was revealed by the prophet Muhammad. Muslim teaches that there is only one God in the universe, Allah, the name Allah means "God" in Arabic

- Protestant - protestant originated in the 16th century. Protestant is a form of Christianity. One of the 3 major divisions of Christendom. A group of church that broke off from the Roman Catholic Churches.

- Judaism - one of the most oldest religions that exists today. Began in early 8th century BC. About 14 million Jews. Jewish life is rich in tradition, rituals and holidays, which commemorates the past, celebrates the present and express hope for the future.

HOW DID THE DOFFERENT RELIGIONS SETTLE IN FRANCE?

-France was a fully catholic country since the time of Charlemagne until the emergence of Protestantism.
-Countries like England, Switzerland and Germany adopted different forms of Protestantism.
-After French Revolution, religions were under state control and new laws were made.
-In 1801, the churches' former status was restored by Napoleon.
-In 1905, the landmark law was passed.

LAWS

WHAT ARE THE LAWS HELD FOR RELIGIONS OR RELIGIOUS ACTIVITY?

-The relationship between the French government and religious organisations is defined by the 1905 landmark law.
- The government is prohibited from from being involved in religious activities.
- Has laws for religious activities/clothing at school.
- The government banned all headscarves. This law came into effect in 2011.
- Girl/women where strictly prohibited from wearing any sorts of head scarves.
