THESIS

Leonardo da Vinci's techniques influenced modern times.

Leonardo's techniques influenced modern times by transforming art and making it more realistic.

"Even though he did not greatly affect the technology at the time, his theoretical treatments and complete documentation were significant, greatly impacting the future. Da Vinci remains the quintessential example of the utmost in human capability." - asme.org

Leonardo changed the art world, he created the techniques that make paintings realistic and more visually appealing. He changed perspective making it more realistic and he also used to techniques called chiaroscuro and sfumato. Chiaroscuro gave everything a soft lifelike feel. Sfumato made objects that were farther away have less color.

This early piece of renaissance art, "St.Michael Slaying the Dragon" from the Laudario, doesn't have very realistic human figures nor does it have very realistic perspective.

The Last Supper shows how art was transformed and changed. The perspective is really good and if it was in better shape would look very realistic.

Leonardo Da Vinci's techniques influence modern times by being used by modern artists

"The crux of the matter is his intellectual force-self-contained and inherent in every one of his creations. This force has remained constantly operative to the present day." - All-art.org

This quote pretty much praises Leonardo's intellect and says how it is shown in each one of his creations and us still present until today

Untitled Slide

This piece of early Renaissance art known as "The Lamentation of Christ" shows how artwork was like before Leonardo's techniques were used. The perspective is getting there but isn't quite right. The people aren't very lifelike and the objects farther back are still the same color as the ones in the front.

The Mona Lisa is a good example to show off chiaroscuro and sfumato. The chiaroscuro in this painting gives everything the realistic aspect that makes it seem real. The sfumato is present in the background, the farther the objects are the more they have a gray discoloration and eventually are no longer visible.

Untitled Slide

This modern piece of art, shows how Leonardo's techniques are still used today. As objects recede so does their color which shows sfumato. There is also chiaroscuro in this piece which gives the trees and sky a lifelike feeling.

Conclusion

As you can see Da Vinci has influence modern times mainly through his art.
