NEUROSIS

  • Neurosis is the inability for a person to keep up with their mind

REPRESSION

  • The mind has thoughts and impulses unacceptable to society
  • Repression is keeping these thoughts from the conscious
  • Freud believed these thoughts could be brought out with "The Talking Cure"
  • Ex: Pretending that a fight with a good friend did not happen
  • Ex: Pretending that a fight with a good friend did not happen

FIXATION

  • Fixation is failing to advance to the next stage of development
  • Being stuck in one stage and unable to move from it
  • Ex: A child that has down-syndrome and must live in care for their entire life

I learned that not everyone goes through the same psychosexual stages. Things like regression, repression, and fixation can occur, stunting the growth of an individual. This is normal and is common in Freud's analysis.
