PROTISTS AND BACTERIA

REPRODUCTION METHODS

PROTISTS

  • Protists can reproduce asexually or sexually
  • Some protists, like spirogyra, are haploid protists
  • Haploid protists reproduce through binary fission
  • In stressful environments, protists can make spores
  • If spores of two protists are brought in close proximity, they can reproduce

PROTISTS

  • Also reproduce through budding
  • A small piece grows off the original protist
  • The piece breaks off and grows into an identical copy of the protist
  • A form of asexual reproduction

BACTERIA

  • Divide mainly through binary fission (asexual)
  • In binary fission, the bacteria splits into two identical daughter cells
  • This can happen every twenty minutes
  • Genetic variation occurs when they grab stray pieces of DNA from their environment
  • Genetic variation can also happen with plasmid transfer

COMPARISON/CONTRAST

  • Both can reproduce asexually, through binary fission
  • Protists can also reproduce using spores sexually
  • Bacteria can only reproduce asexually
  • Protists have complex lifestyles, while bacteria have fairly simple ones
