REPTILES: TURTLES AND TORTOISES

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Shells
  • Cold blooded
  • Vocalize to mate
  • Scales
  • Able to be on land or water

BOX TURTLES: ADAPTATIONS

  • Bony shell provides protection from predators
  • Hinged plastrom allows complete shell closure
  • Thick shells to avoid injury
  • Sharp beak acts like shears for slicing vegetation
  • Some of the only turtles that can completely close their shells

GIANT TORTOISES: ADAPTATIONS

  • Long neck for reaching leaves and fruits
  • Flat feet to walk on sand
  • Huge shell to protect the soft body inside
  • Can live to be 255 years old

FUN FACTS

  • Box Turtle: if a female is around a male it will feel like reproducing
  • Tortioses are turtles but turtles are not tortoises
  • Tortoises: have an exoskeleton and endoskeleton
  • Tortoises: can not swim but can hold its breath for a long time
  • Box Turtle: sheilds from heat and dryness and protects from fire
