OSAGE NATION

Illustrations by Emet and research by Vanessa

Ancient Origins

  • The original Osage territory covered a 300 mile radius starting from the intersection of four states, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
  • Their modern Reservation is now in Tulsa Oklahoma, a small and pathetic excuse for their previous, expansive territory.

Political Structure

  • The modern reservation is governed by Chiefs. They are now part of the Executive Governmental branch.
  • The Executive branch mission statement is to supply a sustainable and efficient education, work, and health environment for the community.
  • As well as preserving and conserving the Osage peoples' culture.

Who Governs?

  • Geoffrey Standing Bear- Principal Chief. Chairman in many political committees, including Ethics, Health, Housing, Cultural, and Education.
  • Raymond Red Corn- Assistant Principal Chief, with local and communal issues, including agriculture, work properties, and regional diplomatic matters.

How they learn

  • The Education Department's mission statement "strives to provide educational and supportive services to Osages so they can obtain the skills needed to become productive individuals and contributors to their community."

Where they work

  • Job listings are found on the official Osage Nation Website, they include
  • Government and political positions
  • Hirings in the local Casino, named Osage.
  • Jobs in the community's enterprise called Tallgrass.
  • Only corporate jobs were mentioned on the official website.

Town's housing

  • Tulsa Reservation housing is mostly just like ordinary housing, efficient, space conscious, and comfortable.
  • There are several varieties of houses to purchase altering in space, its overall condition, its age, and if its customized. Usually homes are large and adequate to support many family and community members.

Tulsa in the News

  • An article written on the 25th of August, 2016 says that land owner Ted Turner grants ownership of his 43,000 acre land space to the Osage Nation Tulsa Native American Reserve for 74 million dollars. With this purchase, a great fraction is added back to their land when they originally owned 1.2 million acres of expansive land.

Tradition Today

  • Despite much of the language and many traditions being lost over the generations, many efforts have been made to preserve this precious and stunning culture of the Osage People, and to a great measure of success. There are many holidays and events held today including the Pawwow Princess crowning event which took place at the end of March of this year.
