FUNCTION: Supply the blood and body with oxygen

ALVEOLI

  • Give lungs surface area
  • Moist walls, only one cell thick
  • Have lots of capillaries

CO2 IN THE BLOOD

  • Taken from cells to lungs
  • Diffusion into RBC
  • Dissolved with hemoglobin
  • Bicarbonate (HCO2-)

  • Diffuses into blood
  • Dissolves into RBC with hemoglobin

THE PATH OF OXYGEN

  • Through the nose
  • Down the trachea
  • Bronchi then bronchiole
  • Capillaries in alveoli
  • Into the RBC!

INHALE

  • Diaphragm, flexes downward
  • Creates a vacuum (low pressure, high volume)

EXHALE

  • Diaphragm relaxes upward
  • Forces air out
  • High pressure, low volume

PNEUMONIA

  • Imflammation in air sacs
  • Sacs fill with fluid
  • Coughing
  • Fever
  • Chills
