5 FUN FACTS

  • The right lung is slightly larger than the left. Hairs in the nose help to clean the air we breathe as well as warming it. The highest recorded "sneeze speed" is 165 km per hour. The surface area of the lungs is the same size as a tennis court.

THE BREATHING PROCESS

  • When you breathe in, or inhale, your diaphragm (tightens) and moves downward. This increases the space in your chest cavity, into which your lungs expand. The muscles between your ribs also help enlarge the chest cavity. They contract to pull your rib cage both upward and outward when you inhale.
