The respiratory System has two main parts. They are the lungs and the system of tubes that connect the lungs with the outside air. The respiratory system brings oxygen to the red blood cells and gets rid of carbon dioxide.

Cells need oxygen. When you breathe in oxygen from the air enters your lungs. Millions of air sacks in the lungs are surrounded by capillaries. The auction passes through the walls of the air sacs into the capillaries. Red blood cells pick up the oxygen.

Red blood cells also release the waste gas carbon dioxide into the lungs sacks. When you breathe out, carbon dioxide goes into the atmosphere. Transports oxygen to the blood and carries carbon dioxide away from the blood.
