PRESENTATION OUTLINE

NASAL CAVITY
Structure: divided by nasal septum, has olfactory receptors,
and the walls are lined with veins and cilia.
Function: allows for sense of smell, warms air that it
receives, and traps incoming bacteria.

PHARYNX
Structure: a red tube that is 5 inches long, contains nasopharynx,
oropharynx, laryngopharynx; also contains tonsils.
Function: acts as passageway for food, receives drainage from middle ear.

LARYNX
Structure: contains thyroid cartilage, epiglottis, vocal cords, and glottis.
Function: moves air and food in the right direction, allows for speech,

TRACHEA
Structure: is a 4 in tube that extends to midchest, walls are lined
with hyaline cartilage.
Function: allows the esophagus to expand when we swallow a large piece of food,
also keeps the trachea walls open.
5.
BRONCHI
Structure: has right and left branches, connects to
the hilius of the lungs.
Function: acts as a passageway for air.

LUNGS
Structure: both left and right sides have lobes, covered with
pulmonary pleura.
Function: receives oxygen and contracts to expel carbon dioxide.

BRACHIOLES
Structure: small little branches in the lungs, reinforced cartilage in the walls,
Function: to carry oxygen to all part so the lungs.
8.
ALVEOLI
Structure: small air sacs in the lungs that resemble bunches of grapes.
Function: gas exchange in the lungs.
