What is "Restorative Practices"?

-is an emerging social science that studies how to strengthen relationships between individuals as well as social connections within communities.

2 Types of Restorative Circles:

Proactive ( to build) vs Responsive ( to repair)

Proactive vs responsive

  • Proactive circles should account for 80% of circles implemented in classroom
  • Include but are not limited to: creating norms, community building, course content, talking about specific topics (i.e. bullying, respect, empathy)

PROACTIVE VS REsponsive

  • Responsive circles should account for 20% of circles implemented in classroom
  • Are intentional and address conflict

to Implement Circles with Fidelity

  • introduce purpose & set postive tone
  • start with mindfulness moment ( optional)
  • remain on an intentionally selected and sequenced topic
  • use talking piece to speak 1 at a time

  • move in sequential order
