The Rough Riders

WHO IS TEDDY?

  • Most of us know him as our 26th president, serving from 1901-1909
  • Before he was president, he was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy
  • He resigned in 1898 and organized the Rough Riders
  • The Rough Riders were the first voluntary Calvary in the Spanish-American war

ROUGH RIDERS

  • Roosevelt wanted diversity
  • Recruited cowboys, miners, law enforcement, and native Americans.
  • Wanted people that could handle the heat that was awaiting them in Cuba
  • Many rough riders were inexperienced, but not all

THE BATTLE OF SAN JUAN HILL

  • The US formed a blockade
  • We first went for El Caney, the to San Juan Hill
  • The US split up to take San Juan Hill and Kettle hill
  • The rough riders were in the fleet at Kettle Hill
  • The US won and the city surrendered, giving Cuba to the US

  • A buffalo soldier is an African American cavalry soldier
  • The 9th and 10th buffalo soldiers

TEDDY AFTER THE WAR

  • Obviously, Roosevelt became president in 1901
  • TR was awarded a Medal of Honor
  • He got out of the navy
  • The war and his rough riders made him famous
  • This fame helped him to become president
