Most of us know him as our 26th president, serving from 1901-1909
Before he was president, he was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy
He resigned in 1898 and organized the Rough Riders
The Rough Riders were the first voluntary Calvary in the Spanish-American war

ROUGH RIDERS
Roosevelt wanted diversity
Recruited cowboys, miners, law enforcement, and native Americans.
Wanted people that could handle the heat that was awaiting them in Cuba
Many rough riders were inexperienced, but not all

THE BATTLE OF SAN JUAN HILL
The US formed a blockade
We first went for El Caney, the to San Juan Hill
The US split up to take San Juan Hill and Kettle hill
The rough riders were in the fleet at Kettle Hill
The US won and the city surrendered, giving Cuba to the US

A buffalo soldier is an African American cavalry soldier
The 9th and 10th buffalo soldiers
