ESSENTIAL QUESTION

IS THE PERSON WHO SEEKS REVENGE SATISFIED AFTER ACHIEVING THE REVENGE?

According to the article "What Gives Victims Satisfaction When They Seek Revenge?" people seek revenge because they want to get even with another person who has caused them pain.
Sometimes their plan for revenge works out perfectly, but sometimes the person seeking revenge is plagued with even more pain.

I am sure you have heard the saying "Revenge is sweet," and sometimes it can be fulfilling. People seek revenge because they want that satisfaction of causing someone else the pain they have felt. In the article by Gollwitzer, Mader, and Schmitt, another reason a person seeks revenge is to show dominance over the other person. In addition, people seek revenge as a means of getting justice. Revenge essentially communicates, "You will be punished for what you did before.’’ Lastly, our society dictates that seeking revenge is a good thing through movies, plays, and novels. Revenge is socially acceptable and encouraged.

There are many negative effects to revenge. Revenge is a very risky task to take on. You have to be sneaky and clever. Revenge can even backfire on you. Sometimes someone can be so invested in getting revenge that it tortures him or her more than the initial hurt. This is seen in the physical decline and eventual death of Roger Chillingworth in Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter."
