THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF RHINOS LIKE...

  • White Rhinos - Southern and Northern (Northern in almost extinct).
  • Black Rhinos - Made of four subspecies. Similar to White Rhinos.
  • Indian Rhinos - Has one horn. Silver-brown skin with wart-like bumps on legs.
  • Javan Rhinos - One of the most endangered large mammals in the world.
  • Sumatran Rhinos - Smallest of their species, but have the most hair.

FUN FACTS...

  • Rhinos skin is 1.5-5 cm thick
  • Despite their large size, they have small brains (400-600 g)
  • They are herbivores
  • The two African species of the rhino do not have front teeth
  • A group of rhinos is called a crash

RHINOS ARE KILLED AND POACHED BECAUSE...

  • People can sell their horns in the black market
  • They are sometimes used as medicine
  • The dust from grinned horns

The Rhino Rescue Project was organized in 2011

It introduced a way to use the horns whiteout killing the rhino.

Predators of the Rhino

Humans
(For young rhinos) Large cats, wild dogs, crocodiles, and hyenas.

SELF DEFENSE

SOME RHINOS USE THEIR TEETH FOR SELF DEFENSE, NOT THEIR HORNS.

WHERE rHINOS CAN BE FOUND

NAMIBIA, COASTAL EAST AFRICA, BORNEO, SUMATRA, AND THE EASTERN HYMALAYAS

ENDANDGERED AND EXTINCT

  • Javan and Sumatran Rhinos are critically endangered
  • Subspecies of Javan Rhino was told to be extinct in Vietnam, 2011
  • Indian Rhino changed from endangered to vulnurable (Still being poached)
  • Southern White Rhinos were said to be extinct---> now being protected
  • Few of Northern White Rhinos remain.

WHICH rHINOS HAVE LARGE NUMBERS?

BLACK RHINOS HAVE DOUBLED IN THEIR AMOUNT FROM ABOUT 2,480.

BIRTHING FACTS

PREGNANCIES LAST 15-16 MONTHS. MOST RHINO CALVES NEVER SEE THEIR FATHER.

WORLD RHINO DAY

IS CELEBRATED TO SAVE RHINOS FROM EXTINCTION.
