PRESENTATION OUTLINE
FOUNDERS
The founder of the Rhode Island colony was Roger Williams. He believed it was wrong for settlers to take away the Native Americans' land and that the church and government should be separate.
REASONS FOUNDED
Roger Williams thought that the church and the government should be separate and that people should be free to do what they want. He also believed it was wrong for settlers to take away the Native Americans' land. Massachusetts disagreed with him, so he had to set up his own colony.
PEOPLE
Dissenters, or people who didn't agree with the beliefs of the other colonies, came to Rhode Island. The colony was the first place in America where people of all religions were able to worship freely.
ClIMATE AND GEOGRAPHY
The colony was located on the Atlantic coast of North America. It was part of the New England colonies. Rhode Island's climate had short and not-so-hot summers and long, cold winters.
Economy
The colonists made a living out of farming, shipbuilding, and fishing. Farming was a challenge for crops such as wheat because of poor soil- however, corn, pumpkins, rye, squash, and beans were planted.
RELIGION
Rhode Island consisted of just Puritans. Therefore, there were no other religions because the Puritans didn't tolerate any other religion.
POLITICS
As a result of Massachusetts kicking Williams out, he debated with them about their human injustice towards him. In Williams's own colony, however, the settlers were interfering with the Native Americans. As a result, there were several disputes with people from other colonies in an effort to protect the native land.
