RHODE ISLAND.

  • They made it a colony in May 29, 1790
  • The Rhode Island Colony was one of the original 13 colonies located on the Atlantic coast of North America.
  • The Province of Rhode Island was an English colony in North America that existed from 1636 until 1776, when it joined the other 12 of the 13 colonies in rebellion against Great Britain and became the U.S. state of Rhode Island.

RHODE ISLAND

  • Named "Roodt Eylandt" by Adrian Block, the Dutch explorer.
  • Rhode Island, was like-wise in a formative state.
  • For a state that is only 37 miles wide and 48 miles long, it is notable that its shoreline on Narragansett Bay in the Atlantic Ocean runs for 400 miles.

GOVERNMENT

  • Government Rhode Islanders asked Charles II to grant a new charters continuing there basic rights. in 1663 the king issued a paper caleeed the most liberal charter granted by an English monarch in the colonial age. Besides garranting religious freedom, it allowed the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations a self government. The male property owners (freemen) were to vote for the colonies law makers. In addition to a government, Rhode Island a general assembly consisting of representative from various towns and cities. The assembly was to make laws, monitor trade with the indians, found quarts, and form emergency troops caled millisha to protect the Rhode Island colony. The 1663 charter was so respected, it remained the law of Rhode Island for 180 years, well beyond time.

  • Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1636, who had been banished from the Massachusetts colony for his advocacy of religious tolerance and the separation of church and state.

ECONOMY

  • Economy Some Rhode Island sea Captains were involved in piracy as well as trading black slaves. people have romatic notions of pirates, but in truth pirates are thieves and robbers who work at sea. Rhode Island had reputations of welcoming pirates with respect. For example William Kidd, was thought to have turned pirate, Kidd spent most of his time in Rhode Island, and was backed up by many rhode island merchants. There were reasons why Rhode Islanders became a pirate haven. Almost everyone gained from piracy, because pirates sold stolen items cheaply. Because of this people could save money by buying from them. Shopkeepers usually liked having pirates around because they spent money freely.

GEOGRAPHY.

  • Geography Rhode Islands land is greatly varried. Rhode Island has 2 main land regions, the Western 2 thirds of the colony is a hilly landscape with an elevation of just over 800 feet above sea level. The rest of the colony is on the coast. This area contains the coastline and a grouping of small islands Narragansett Bay. Along the shore of sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. Rhode Island is mild and humid. The average temperature in january is 29 degrees farenheit and 71 degrees in July. Rhode island recieves an average of 42 inches of precipitation every year. The weather is unpredictable and windy. Blizzards in the winter and tropical storms in the summer time can sometimes switch to mild conditions in a matter of hours. Rhode island may have a few large mineral deposits, but the land has something more to offer- its soil. The soil in the lowlands is much better then the western and eastern land for cultivation.

  • Massoit is the chief of the wamponags, he became friends to the pilgrims of Plymouth making the success of their colony possible.
  • Samuel Gorton Founded Shawomet Rhode Islands fourth settlement. Few years later the town was named Warwick in honor of him.
  • William Blackstone The first Rhode Island settler.

  • Roger Williams found Rhode Island in 1636.
  • Their were Indians that had already lived their. He made friends with Indians.
  • Later on he bought the land from them,but he never stole it.

  • Rhode Island is the smallest state.
  • There are a lot of trees

EDUCATION.

  • Yes there was an education in Rhode Island.
  • Rhode Island established the fist public school system.
  • At first only boys could go to school and girls would do housework.
  • But know all boys and girls can go to school.
  • Brown university was founded in 1764 and is the third oldest.
