RICE METHOD

R- REST

  • Rest is a key component of repairing the body
  • Without it, continual strain is put on the affected area
  • Some injuries will take longer to heal without it
  • There is also risk of abnormal repair without it
  • Rest period should be until hurt area can be used without pain

I -ICE

  • Ice is excellent at reducing the pain and helping swelling go down
  • You should apply ice for 20 minutes each hour to affected area
  • It is recommended to wrap ice in towel to prevent frostbite to skin

C - COMPRESSION

  • Compression aims to reduce edematous swelling
  • Compression stockings are a viable option to manage swelling
  • An elastic bandage is required
  • Non-elastic bandages can cause inadequate blood flow

E - ELEVATION

  • Elevation aims to reduce swelling
  • Increases venous return of blood to the systemic circulation
  • Will result in less edema which reduces pain
