VIETNAMIZATION/ END OF VIETNAM WAR
President Nixon announced Vietnamization so that he could pull out
U.S troops and build up the South Vietnam army so that South Vietnam could
take responsibility for the Vietnam War. After the South and the North fought
with little help of U.S troops for a couple years, the Paris Peace Accords were
signed completely withdrawing U.S troops from Vietnam.

DETENTE
Détente in a French word that means release from tension and this describes the relations between
between the U.S. and The Soviet Union that began in 1971.
It took a decisive form when Nixon decided to visit Leonid Brezhnev in Moscow, May 1972.
He and Brezhnev signed seven agreements covering the prevention of accidental military clashes;
arms control, as described by SALT 1.

SALT 1
SALT 1 was the first series of strategic arms limitation talks that occurred in November 1969 between
President Richard Nixon and Brezchev. During this time, the Soviet Union and the United States
Discussed and negotiated terms to place limits on nuclear weapons. SALT 1 froze the number of
Ballistic launchers and allowed new submarine launched ballistic missiles only after the same number
Of older intercontinental ballistic missiles were dismantled.

NIXONS VISITS TO CHINA
Nixon arrived in China on February 21, 1972 and he was the first president
to visit the People's Republic of China since it was established in 1949
The U.S. was looking at improving relations with the communist country during the Cold War.
He met with the Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and they agreed to expand cultural contacts between the two of
them. Nixon also established plans for a permanent U.S. trade mission in China.

WATERGATE
On June 17, 1972 robbers were arrested inside the office on the Democratic
National committee trying to wiretap phones and steal documents. They were connected
To the reelection campaign of president Richard Nixon. Nixon tried to pay the robbers off, destroyed
Evidence and fired uncooperative employees, but eventually the scandal got out and ended in Nixon resigning
Ford later pardoned Nixon when he became president.
