• He was born Wilhelm Richard Wagner on May 22, 1813, in Leipzig, Germany. He was the ninth child in the family of Carl Wagner, a police clerk. Richard was only six months old when his father died, and he was brought up by his mother Johanna and stepfather Ludwig Geyer, an actor and playwright.

• Ride of the Valkyries' is not only one of Wagner's most recognisable pieces of music, but one of the most popular opera songs in the whole canon. Due to being featured in a plethora of films and TV shows, including Apocalypse Now and Star Wars, it's a favourite amongst film buffs and opera goers alike.

• Richered Wagner got married twice. His first wife, Minna Planer, was an actress in the choral company in which Wagner obtained his first post as a conductor. Minna left him and returned to him the year after their marriage

• Wagner and Cosima had two children together before finally marrying in 1870. The first two operas of The Ring Cycle, Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, were presented in Munich in 1869 and 1870

• It is the beginning of act 3 of Die Walküre, the second of the four operas constituting his Der Ring des Nibelungen. this song was finished in 1851.
