RINGWORM

INTRODUCTION

  • Diagnosis: when your skin glows under a blue light during exams
  • Symptoms: itchy, red, raised patches, rash, pus, fever
  • Range: 3-8% of kids in the USA will develop it
  • Prevalence: sports playing people and children (worldwide)
  • Severity: you can't die from them, but they can spread

ABOUT THE PATHOGEN

  • Transmission: person to person, animals, or infected dirt
  • Affected system: only your skin (feet, groin, scalp, body)
  • Immune system: not affected (only top layer of skin)
  • Life cycle: a few weeks to several months (has a long incubation period)

CAUSE AND TREATMENT

  • Treatment: creams such as terbinafine and ketoconozole
  • Prevention: keep skin clean and dry, wash sheets and hands
  • Treatments usually last about 4 weeks

INTERESTING FACTS

  • If left, bald patches and crumbly nails may occur
  • Not all infections shape into a ring
  • They are very contagious!!
  • You can ringworm from pets that have bald patches
