MOUNTAINS

  • Ancient Greece was divided up by mountains
  • Because of this it was natural for independent city-states to evolve

COMMUNITY/ SMALL SETTLEMENT

  • Individual citizens could take part in issues of their community
  • Free males made decisions affecting their polis such as voting

THE LAND AREA

  • A polis was made up of a city such as Athens or Sparta
  • There was also surrounding countryside
  • The surrounding country side was about 50-500 square miles

FUN FACT

  • Poleis is a root word for modern words such as police and politics
