CORNELIUS VANDERBILT

  • He was a robber baron. During the Civil War he sold or leased to the U.S. Navy unseaworthy vessels at inflated prices
  • some were in such bad shape they sank before leaving port.
  • After the Civil War he used lawyers and hired guns to steal land from settlers and indians to build his railroads on

HENRY FRICK

  • When Carnegie retired in 1889, Frick became chairman of Carnegie Steel
  • under his management it became the world's largest coke and steel operation.
  • He was a lead investor in a group which purchased a reservoir now known as Lake Conemaugh, near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, converting the shore into a private resort for the wealthy called the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club.

JAY GOULD

  • he worked with allies James Fisk and Daniel Drew to combat Cornelius Vanderbilt's acquisition of the railroad
  • Gould used every underhanded trick, from bribing public officials to massively watering stock.
  • attempted to corner the gold market,

  • Both. He was a financier bent on forming a monopoly of the steel industry
