  • Born: 1725 in Dishley, England
  • Died: October 1, 1795, in Dishley, England

  • Born into a family of tenant farmers
  • Traveled Europe to learn about farming methods
  • In 1760, he gained ownership of his family farm

  • He was an advanced farmer and was open to new methods
  • These methods included irrigation and building canals to flood the fields
  • He also tested different manure and flooding methods

  • Was one of the first farmers to breed both sheep and cattle for meat instead of mainly for wool or work

  • Bakewell separated male and female animals to prevent random breeding
  • Developed "in-and-in"

  • This method also removed animals with undesirable traits
  • Process known as selective breeding
