ROBERT E LEE

EARLY YEARS

• Born January 19, 1807.
• Westmoreland County, Virginia.
• His father was "Light-horse Harry Lee"
• Harry Lee was a hero of the American Revolution
• Friend of George Washington

1829

• Graduated 2nd in his class at West Point.
• First student to graduate without a demerit
• Gave him the nickname "Marble Model"

WAR LIFE

• In 1846 the Mexican American War began
• Became the superintendent of West Point
• In 1849, Lee lead the troops in defeating John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry
• 2 years later, General Scott offers command of the Union Army
• In 1861, Lee resigns from the United States Army

CIVIL WAR

• 1861- Lee accepts command of the military/naval forces of Virginia
• On June first of that year he was given command of the army
• Lead them to multiple victories
• (1862-1863) seven days battle, second manassas, Chancellorsville etc.
• June 15, 1864 the siege of Petersburg begins, lasts for nine months
