PRESENTATION OUTLINE

METAMORPHIC

  • Metamorphic rocks are made when other rocks are changed by heat and pressure in the Earth.

METAMORPHIC ROCK FACTS

  • Marble is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the sedimentary rock limestone.
  • Uplift and erosion help bring the metamorphic rocks up to the Earth's surface.

IGNEOUS ROCK

  • Igneous comes from the Latin word fire.
  • Igneous rock is created from the cooling of molten rock either magma or lava.
  • Intrusive rocks have large crystals and cool slowly.
  • Extrusive rocks have small crystals and cool quickly.

IGNEOUS ROCK FACTS

  • Intrusive rocks are formed beneath the surface of the Earth.
  • Extrusive rocks form above the Earth's surface.

SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

  • Sedimentary rocks are made from small pieces of material that come from rocks or living things.
  • Sedimentary rocks are pressed down over time and different layers of sediments create a rock.

SEDIMENTARY ROCK FACTS

  • The sediment is compressed over a long period of time before turning into solid layers of rock.
  • Sedimentary rocks form layers called strata which can often be seen in exposed cliffs.
