Rock

a naturally formed solid made of one or more minerals

igneous rock

rock that was once melted and then cooled and hardened

sedimentary rock

rock made when materials settle into layers and get squeezed until they harden

metamorphic rock

rock that has been changed by heat or pressure

How Igneous Rocks Form

  • melted rock reaches Earth's surface
  • it cools
  • this could happen through a volcano

How Sedimentary Rock Forms

  • wind and water break rocks into bits
  • wind and water carry away the bits of rock
  • the bits settle into layers
  • after time, they harden
  • many fossils are found in this type of rock

How Metamorphic Rock Forms

  • forms deep int Earth's crust
  • pressure and temperature cause the rocks to change
  • sediments and layers mix

The Rock Cycle

It can take MILLIONS of years to change rocks!

Weathering

wind, water, and ice break down earth's crust
