TYPES OF ROCKS

  • Sedimentary
  • Igneous
  • Metamorphic

SEDIMENTARY ROCK FORMATION

  • Layers of rock bits settle at the bottom of the ocean
  • Over time, they clump together and turn into rocks

TYPES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

  • Sandstone (Soft stone, made when grains of sand stick together)
  • Shale (Clay that has hardened and turned into rock)
  • Limestone (Made of calcium carbonate and microscopic shells)

IGNEOUS ROCK FORMATION

  • Form when magma from the earth's core cools
  • The type of igneous rock formed depends on the mix of materials in the rock

TYPES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS

  • Granite (quartz, feldspar, mica)
  • Diorite (feldspar is dominant, +more minerals)
  • Gabbro ( minerals are dominant, +feldspar)

METAMORPHIC ROCK FORMATION

  • Originally igneous or sedimentary
  • A lot of pressure or heat cause them to change to metamorphic rock

TYPES OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS

  • Slate (originally shale-splits into smooth tabs)
  • Schist (most common type, contains mica)
  • Gneiss (Several different types of rock, streaky, often forms from granite)
